Recently we had the opportunity to interview Shalina Joy. Shalina is an interior and exterior designer and host of the HGTV show, “American Rehab: Restoring Victoria.”
In elementary school Shalina got her start with power tools and building. In her wood shop class, they built a home in the classroom. “I developed a love of power tools and craftsmanship” This love has taken her far and now she gets to share this with her viewers while restoring Victoria. “ It was a passion for me. From there, I loved fixing things and designing. I was one of those people who felt I don’t have to buy it, I can make it.”
These experiences led her to where she is today. Shalina told us about the show. “It is about a single mother who recently purchased a family legacy home as a fresh start for her and her children. It is a Mediterranean revival home in Newark, NJ circa 1910. Although I’ve renovated homes since 2004, nothing compares to the challenges that are going to be faced on the show, the pressures of time and budget. The show is about the restoration versus the renovation of a valuable historic home.”
Shalina found Victoria at the perfect time in her life. Victoria is not only a home to restore, but a new start as a single mother. “I believe in destiny and that all things happen for a reason. I believe that this house was meant for me at this time.”
We asked Shalina about her advice to other woman. “It is an empowerment for women who know they can do it themselves. This show will show people you don’t have to be afraid of a little work. If you put a little bit of sweat and tears into it, you can do it. Don’t be afraid of taking your time.
